What is ‘tapping’ a hole?

Taps (tap wrench in pic) are used to cut an internal thread in a hole. In school, threads from 2mm diameter to 12mm diameter in 1mm jumps can be cut.

What is ‘threading’?

A die is used to cut an external thread on the outside of a rod.

Best way to cut external thread?

With the die split open as far as possible, test fitting of threads. If too tight, recut and test again. Keep going until thread runs smoothly
