Central Nervous System (CNS)

Made up of the brain and spinal cord; integrates information from different body systems.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

Consists of nerves that branch off from the brain and spine, connecting the CNS to the rest of the body.

Afferent Neurons

Also known as sensory neurons, these send signals from sensory receptors to the central nervous system.

Efferent Neurons

Also known as motor neurons, these send signals from the central nervous system to the peripheral nervous system.

Somatic Nervous System

Controls voluntary movements and includes skeletal muscles and sensory receptors.

Autonomic Nervous System

Controls involuntary activities and regulates bodily functions such as heart rate and digestion.

Sympathetic Division

Part of the autonomic nervous system responsible for the fight-or-flight response, mobilizing the body for action.

Parasympathetic Division

Part of the autonomic nervous system that promotes rest and digest functions, slowing heart rate and increasing digestion.
