Name the 4 tissue types
Epithelium, connective, muscle, nervous
Epithelium tissue characteristics
linings, coverings, glandular tissue
tightly packed continuous sheets
ex. outer layer of skin, stomach lining, air sacks in lungs
Connective tissue characteristics
protects, supports, binds
cells integrated into a non living matrix
ex. bones, cartilage, fat, blood, ligaments, tendons
Muscle tissue characteristics
contracts and causes movements
skeletal- attached to skeleton, movement, voluntary
smooth- digestive tract, pushes liquids/objects through body, involuntary
cardiac- heart, squeezes heart/pumps, involuntary
Nervous tissue characteristics
composed of neurons
sends and receives signals in body
ex. brain, spinal cord, nerves
Epithelium tissue

Connective tissue

Muscle Tissue

Nervous tissue

Osteon
columns of bone tissue

central canal/ haverisian canal
longitudinal canal that contains blood vessels, carrying blood to and from the osteon
lamella
layers of matrix around the central canal
lacuna
site of osteocytes
osteocytes
mature bones, scattered throughout lamella
canaliculi
narrow passageways connecting osteocytes
Compact Bone

Spongy Bone

epiphyses
ends of long bone, contain spongy bone and red bone marrow
diaphysis
middle of long bone, contains medullary cavity and yellow bone marrow
compact bone
located around perimeter of long bone, surrounds medullary cavity
periosteum
covers entire long bone, allows blood and nutrients to enter
metaphysis
neck portion of long bone
irregular bones
maxilla, mandible, sacrum, hip bones
short bones
carpals, tarsals
long bones
humerus, femur, tibia
flat bones
parietal bones, sternum, shoulder blades, ribs
