What is the first discussion point for the idiographic vs nomothetic debate?

One discussion point is to consider is whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity.

2
New cards

What is the P of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

P- One strength of the nomothetic approach is that it has scientific credibility.

3
New cards

What is the E of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

E- For example, the biological approach uses brain scans and genetic studies to investigate behaviour, whilst behaviourists such as Skinner used carefully controlled laboratory experiments using specifcally designed equipment to identify principles of learning. Such methods produce reliable and replicable findings with strong internal validity or focus on the key variables.

4
New cards

What is the C of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

C- Therefore, the nomothetic approach has scientific credibility because it allows psychologists to develop objective, evidence-based explanations of behaviour that increase psychology’s status as a science.

5
New cards

What is the P of the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

P- However, a limitation of the nomothetic approach may be its lack of detail

6
New cards

What is the E of the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

E- As the nomothetic approach focuses on identifying general laws that apply to large groups of people, it may ignore important individual differences. For example, explanations of depression from the biological approach often focus on neurotransmitters and genetics but may overlook personal experiences that contribute to the disorder. In contrast, idiographic research as Freud’s case studies produce a much deeper understanding of an infividual’s thoughts and experiences.

7
New cards

What is the C of the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the nomothetic approach has validity?

Therefore, although the nomothetic approach can identify broad patterns of behaviours, it may provide an incomplete understanding of complex human experiences that may lack external validity.

8
New cards

What is the second discussion point for the nomothetic vs idiographic debate?

Another discussion point to consider is whether or not the idiographic approach has validity.

9
New cards

What is the P for the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

P- One strength of the idiographic approach is that it provides rich, detailed data.

10
New cards

What is the E for the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

E- For example, Freud’s case study of Little Hans provided detailed insights into the development of phobias, while humanist psychologists use in-depth interviews to understand the self- actualisation and congruence between the self and ideal- self. Such research can generate valuable insights into behaviour that might otherwise be overlooked and that may form the basis of future scientific testing.

11
New cards

What is the C for the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

C- Therfore, the idiographic approach can provide a deeper and more complete understanding of individual behaviour than approaches that focus solely on general laws, making it more externally valid.

12
New cards

What is the P for the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

P- However, a limitation of the idiographic approach may be its lack of scientific rigour.

13
New cards

What is the E for the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

For example, Freud’s psychodynamic explanations were based largely on individual case studies and lacked the controlled methods used in laboratory experiments. Furthermore, many of Freud’s concepts, such as Id, Ego and Superego, are impossible to measure and therefore, defeat scientific investigation. As a result, findings may be influenced by researcher bias and cannot easily be generalised to a wider population.

14
New cards

What is the C for the limitation of the discussion point on whether or not the idiographic approach has validity?

C- Therefore, the idiographic approach may be criticised for lacking scientific credibility and external validity (the reason why most approaches avoid it, “the worst of both worlds.”)
