Effective Communication
The act of sharing information between two people (or groups of people) so that the information is successfully understood
Contamination
The presence, or the reasonably anticipated presence, of blood or other potentially infectious materials on an item’s surface, or visible debris or residues such as dust, hair, and skin
Motor nerves
Also known as efferent nerves; carry impulses from the brain to the muscles or glands; these transmitted impulses produce movement

Also known as sweat glands; excrete perspiration and detoxify the body by excreting excess salt and unwanted chemicals
Onyx
Technical term for nails of the fingers and toes
Scutula
Dry, sulfur-yellow crusts on the scalp in tinea favosa or tinea favus; has distinctive odor
Iontophoresis
Process of infusing water-soluble products into the skin with the use of electric current, such as the use of the positive and negative poles of a galvanic machine
Shrinkage
When hair contracts or lifts through the action of moisture loss or drying
Deionized water
Water that has had impurities (such as calcium, magnesium, and other metal ions that would make a product unstable) removed
Weight line
Visual line in the haircut where the ends of the hair hang together
Ribboning
Technique of forcing the hair between the thumb and the back of the comb to create tension and compact ends
Capless wig
Also known as open caps; machine-made from human or artificial hair that is woven into rows of wefts; eggs are then sewn to elastic strips in a circular pattern to fit the head shape
Weaving
Involves taking 1/8 inch hair sections by making a straight part at the scalp, then separating select strands using a tail comb to go in and out of the section; lightener or color is applied only to those strands
Oxidation-reduction
Also known as redox; a chemical reaction in which the oxidizing agent is reduced (by losing oxygen) and the reducing agent is oxidized (by gaining oxygen)
Rosacea
Formerly called acne rosacea, chronic condition that appears primarily on the cheeks and nose; characterized by flushing (redness); telangiectasia (distended or dilated surface blood vessels); and in some cases the formation of papules and pustules
Contraindication
Condition that requires avoiding certain treatments, procedures, or products to prevent undesirable side effects
Melanonychia
Significant darkening of the fingernails and toenails caused by increased pigment cells
