Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
A chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system involving damage to myelin.
Myelin
Insulation around nerve fibers that allows nerve impulses to travel quickly and efficiently.
Demyelination
The process of losing the myelin sheath of a nerve fiber, leading to impaired nerve conduction.
Neurologic symptoms
Symptoms that arise due to impaired nerve conduction from damaged myelin.
Optic nerve
A nerve that transmits visual information from the retina to the brain.
Spasticity
A condition in which muscles are continuously contracted, leading to stiffness and tightness.
Diplopia
Also known as double vision, a condition where a person sees two images of a single object.
Fatigue
A common symptom of MS, characterized by extreme tiredness and lack of energy.
Relapse/remission pattern
A cycle in MS where symptoms may increase (flare/relapse) and then improve (return toward baseline).
Anti-inflammatory agents
Medications used in MS treatment to reduce inflammation.
Antispasmodics
Medications that help manage muscle spasms and spasticity.
Infection prevention
Strategies to reduce the risk of infections in MS patients, important due to immune-modifying treatments.
Cognitive changes
Alterations in mental functions such as memory and concentration experienced by some MS patients.
Environmental factors
Factors related to the environment that may contribute to the development of MS.
Temperature extremes
Conditions of extreme heat or cold that can exacerbate MS symptoms.
Neurologic deficits
Functional impairments resulting from damaged myelin and impaired nerve conduction.
Plaque/lesion formation
The development of areas of damage in the CNS where myelin has been lost.
Genetic susceptibility
The increased likelihood of developing MS based on genetic factors.
Monitoring laboratory values
Regular checks on blood counts and other values to manage the patient's health and treatment effectively.
Mobility
The ability to move freely and easily, often affected in MS patients.
Cooling strategies
Methods to prevent overheating in MS patients, crucial for symptom management.
