Mi'raj
The journey undertaken by Prophet Muhammad to meet Allah, which occurred in the tenth year of Prophethood.
'Addas
A Christian slave from Nineveh in Iraq who served grapes to the Prophet in a vineyard outside Ta'if and embraced his prophetic status after discussing the prophet Jonah.
Al-Mut'im ibn 'Adiy
A leader in Makkah who granted protection to Prophet Muhammad upon his return from Ta'if, sending his sons to escort him safely to the Ka'bah.
Buraq
A white creature of medium size, larger than a donkey, brought by Jibril to carry Prophet Muhammad on his night journey.
Zayd ibn Haritha
The companion who traveled with the Prophet to Ta'if and attempted to shield him with his blanket from stones thrown by the youth of the town.
'Utbah and Shayba
Two brothers, sons of Rabi'a, who owned the vineyard outside Ta'if where Prophet Muhammad sought refuge after being driven out of the city.
Khadijah
The Prophet's beloved first wife of twenty-five years, who provided constant counsel, financial sacrifice, and emotional support, honored with the title 'Mother of the Believers.'
Abul-Qasim
The agnomen (kunya) of Prophet Muhammad, derived from the name of his eldest son, Qasim.
Harith ibn Hala
A companion who rushed to defend the Prophet during an attack at the Ka'bah following Abu Talib's death and was killed in the defense.
'Uqba ibn Abi Mu'ayt
An enemy and neighbor of the Prophet who, following Abu Jahl's request, placed the foetus of a she-camel on the Prophet's back while he was prostrating in the Ka'bah.
Halima
A woman of the Banu Sa'd tribe who fostered and nursed the infant Muhammad in the desert, during which her household was blessed with abundance and good fortune.
Bilal
A Muslim slave belonging to Umayya ibn Khalaf who endured intense torture on hot desert sand while repeating 'One! One! one God!' before being purchased and freed by Abu Bakr.
Khabbab ibn Arat al-Tamimi
An early believer enslaved to Umm Numayr in Jahiliyyah, who was tortured on glowing cinders until his back turned white, and who taught the Quran to early converts.
'Ammar ibn Yasir
An early convert whose entire family faced brutal persecution in Makkah because they were not original inhabitants and lacked a protective clan.
Tufayl ibn 'Amr
A talented poet who initially plugged his ears with cotton to avoid the Prophet's message, but after listening objectively, converted to Islam and guided his entire clan to faith.
Abu Kabsha
A mocking nickname given to Prophet Muhammad by the Quraysh, referring to a worshipper of stars who deviated from standard Arab custom.
Hazr ibn Harith
A Quraysh figure who bought ancient Persian legends of Rustam and Isfandiyar to distract people from listening to the revelations of the Quran.
Hashim ibn 'Amr
A Makkan who mobilized support during the third year of the social and economic boycott against Banu Hashim to successfully end the blockade.
Ja'far ibn Abi Talib
The Muslim spokesperson who defended the emigrants at the court of King Najashi in Abyssinia and recited verses from Surah Maryam.
Najashi
The Christian ruler of Abyssinia who granted safety to the persecuted Muslim emigrants and wept upon hearing Quranic verses concerning Jesus.
Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib
The brave uncle of the Prophet (also known as Abu 'Ummara) who struck Abu Jahl with a bow and proclaimed his acceptance of Islam after learning Abu Jahl had insulted his nephew.
House of Arqam
The secret central hub in Makkah where Prophet Muhammad organized (jama'ah) and instructed (tarbiyyah) the early Muslims.
'Umar ibn al-Khattab
A prominent Makkan who entered the fold of Islam after being moved by the recitation of Surah Ta-Ha at the house of his sister Fatima and her husband Sa'id.
