Nu (ν)
The variable representing frequency (also referred to by the speaker as "v" or "new"), measured in inverse seconds (s−1) and directly proportional to energy.
Lambda (λ)
The variable representing wavelength, which can be found by first calculating nu (ν) or by rearranging the energy equation directly, with final values expressed in meters or nanometers.
Inverse seconds (s−1)
The unit of frequency (given in the example as 6.88×1014s−1) that cancels out in division to yield wavelength in meters.
Direct relationship between frequency and energy
The physical principle stating that the higher the frequency of a wave, the higher its energy.
Inverse relationship between wavelength and energy
The physical principle stating that a longer wavelength corresponds to lower energy because the frequency is also lower.
Flank's constant
The constant named in the lecture (also referred to in Chapter 2 as "plant's aspect") that is multiplied by frequency (ν) in the energy relationship.
Nanometer (nm)
The required unit of measurement for the final wavelength (λ) answer after converting and canceling joules.
