Primary Assessment
A rapid evaluation used to identify and manage life-threatening conditions.
Secondary Assessment
A detailed evaluation performed after immediate life threats have been addressed to identify injuries and determine appropriate care
Airway
The passage through which air travels into and out of the lungs; it must remain open for normal breathing.
Breathing
The process of moving air into and out of the lungs and assessing whether the athlete is breathing adequately.
Circulation
The movement of blood throughout the body; assessment includes checking for pulses, severe bleeding, and signs of adequate perfusion.
Level of Consciousness (LOC)
A measurement of how alert and responsive an athlete is.
Palpation
Using the hands to feel body tissues to identify tenderness, swelling, deformity, temperature changes, or other abnormalities.
Range of Motion (ROM)
The amount of movement available at a joint
Neurovascular Assessment
An assessment of circulation, sensation, and motor function distal to an injury.
Selective Tissue Tests (STT)
Specific physical examination techniques used to help identify or rule out injuries or conditions.
