Engineering
The application of mathematics, science, technology, and creativity to design, analyze, and improve solutions that meet human needs under constraints such as cost, safety, sustainability, and ethics.
Scientist
A professional on the technology team who seeks new knowledge, focuses on why phenomena occur, and utilizes the scientific method to make discoveries.
Scientific Method
A systematic approach used by scientists to investigate phenomena by forming hypotheses, conducting experiments, analyzing data, and developing theories or laws.
Engineer
A professional who applies math and science to design solutions, solve practical problems, and create devices, systems, and processes focusing on feasibility, reliability, safety, and efficiency.
Engineering Technologist
A member of the technical team who applies engineering principles, modifies and improves designs, and bridges the gap between theory and practice.
Technician
A technical professional who performs experiments and measurements, prepares drawings, and directly supports engineers and scientists.
Skilled Tradesperson
A hands-on worker often trained through apprenticeships who focuses on practical execution to build, operate, and maintain equipment without requiring deep theoretical knowledge.
Engineering Design Process
A structured series of steps to create solutions: Recognize the Need, Define the problem, Gather Information, Generate Solutions, Analyze and select a solution, Implement the best solution, Evaluate Solution, Communicate the results, and Refine or Redesign.
ABET Accreditation
A formal evaluation ensuring that engineering educational programs meet defined quality standards and prepare students across essential technical and professional outcomes.
Internship
A single supervised work experience that enables engineering students to gain practical experience, improve job prospects, and clarify career goals.
Cooperative Education (Co-op)
An academic program characterized by alternating semesters of academic study and practical work experience.
Continuing Education
Lifelong professional development undertaken by engineers through short courses, certifications, seminars, conferences, and graduate education to keep pace with evolving knowledge.
NSPE Code of Ethics
A core ethical framework establishing that engineers must hold paramount public safety, perform services only in areas of competence, issue truthful public statements, and avoid deceptive acts.
Engineer’s Creed
A professional pledge whereby engineers dedicate their professional knowledge and skill to the advancement and betterment of human welfare, placing public welfare above personal gain.
