Vocabulary practice flashcards covering sanitation, client draping, cutting safety zones, equipment handling, fall prevention, and NIC blood spill protocols.
Tool sanitization rule
The requirement to sanitize all tools and equipment both before and after every haircut.
Client protective clothing
Protective coverings placed on the client during a haircut, consisting of a gown, cape, and a cutting collar (sanex or towel).
Pre-shampoo scalp examination
The procedure of checking the client's hair and scalp for cuts, abrasions, and infections prior to shampooing.

Safety zone of fingers
The cutting boundary that should never be crossed, defined as cutting past the second knuckle of the index and middle finger.
Dropped tool protocol
The safety requirement to clean and sanitize a dropped comb or pair of shears—or replace them with a new pair—before continuing to cut.
Ergonomic posture and positioning
Maintaining proper body alignment and stance while working to help minimize fatigue and reduce the risk of injury.
Post-haircut hair sweeping
The rule requiring all cut hair to be swept up immediately after finishing the haircut, preferably before blow-drying and styling.

Palming shears
The practice of removing the thumb from the thumb brace and holding the shears flat in the palm whenever combing the hair.
Clipper inspection protocol
Checking the plug, cord, and casing of electric clippers to ensure proper working condition, reporting any faults to an instructor, and refraining from use if broken.
Slips and falls prevention
Preventative safety steps to avoid slippery floors, including sweeping hair clippings immediately after each cut and storing supply bags in designated areas.
Classroom supply bag storage
The designated location under the work station where supply bags must be stored in the classroom to prevent trip and fall hazards.
Salon Lab supply bag storage
The designated storage spaces for supply bags in the salon lab, specifically inside the station or in the back classroom.
NIC Blood Spill Procedure
Standard regulatory guidelines used to manage blood exposure incidents safely if bleeding occurs during a salon service.
NIC Blood Spill Procedure (Client bleeding)
The 11-step procedure for a bleeding client: stop service, put on gloves, rinse injury under running water (if appropriate), pat dry with a clean disposable towel, offer/apply antiseptic and adhesive bandage, bag single-use items in trash, clean and disinfect implements, clean and disinfect work area, remove and dispose of gloves, wash hands, and return to service.
NIC Blood Spill Procedure (Cosmetologist bleeding)
The procedure when the stylist bleeds: stop service, explain and excuse yourself, rinse injury under running water (if appropriate), pat dry with disposable towel, apply antiseptic and adhesive bandage, put on gloves, bag single-use items in trash, clean and disinfect implements, clean and disinfect work area, remove gloves, wash hands, apply a protective finger cot or new glove if needed, and return to service.
Finger cot
A protective covering applied over an injured finger or bandage during the cosmetologist blood spill procedure before returning to service.
