Flashcards covering the macroscopic structures (skin, hair, nails) and core macroscopic functions (protection, thermoregulation, and sensation detection) of the integumentary system.
Macroscopic Structures of the Integumentary System
The visible primary components of the integumentary system, consisting of the skin, hair, and nails.
Integumentary System (Protective Function)
Provides protection for underlying tissues and organs against impact, abrasion, fluid loss, foreign invaders, and UV radiation.
Skin (Protective Barrier)
Serves as a physical barrier that shields underlying structures from the sun and outside invaders.
Nails
Macroscopic structures of the integumentary system that provide protection for the fingertips and facilitate scratching.
Integumentary System (Thermoregulation)
Maintains normal body temperature through structures situated within the dermis and hypodermis, as well as hair.
Hair (Thermoregulatory Role)
Helps maintain normal body temperature by trapping heat near the skin through the creation of small air pockets.
Integumentary System (Sensation Function)
Detects sensation and relays the gathered information to the nervous system.
Skin Receptors
Sensory receptors located in the dermis and hypodermis that detect sensations and relay information to the nervous system.
Hair (Sensory Role)
Contributes to sensory detection by sensing changes in position.
