States of Matter
The three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases.
Structure of Solids
State of matter where atoms/molecules are closely packed in a fixed arrangement.
Structure of Liquids
State of matter where atoms/molecules are close but can move around each other.
Structure of Gases
State of matter where atoms/molecules are far apart and move freely.
Shape of Solids
Solids have a definite shape.
Shape of Liquids
Liquids take the shape of their container.
Shape of Gases
Gases spread out to fill the shape of their container.
Volume of Solids
Solids have a definite volume.
Volume of Liquids
Liquids have a definite volume but take the shape of their container.
Volume of Gases
Gases have no definite volume and expand to fill their container.
Kinetic Energy in Gases
Gases have high kinetic energy; particles move rapidly and freely.
Kinetic Energy in Solids
Solids have low kinetic energy; particles vibrate but do not move freely.
Kinetic Energy in Liquids
Liquids have medium kinetic energy; particles can move around each other.
Density
A measure of how much mass is in a certain amount of space.
Honey (Density)
A substance that is more dense than dish soap.
Oil (Density)
A substance that is less dense than water.
Floating of Oil
Oil floats on water because oil is less dense than water.
Floating of Ice
Ice floats on water because ice is less dense than liquid water.
Metals
Elements that are typically shiny, malleable, ductile, and good conductors of heat and electricity.
Nonmetals
Elements that are generally not shiny, brittle, and poor conductors of heat and electricity.
Metalloids
Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals.
Rare Earth Metals
A group of 17 elements known for their unique properties and importance in modern technology.
