Step 1-2 on Redox RXNs in AQ solutions

  1. use redox table to predict the products formed

  2. use half-reaction method to balance equation after writing product formulas and statesRe

2
New cards

Redox Table

  1. used to predict products formed

  2. can determine if products or reactants are dominant if @ equillibrium

  3. can tell if the mediums match (A = Acidic, B = basic, NA = not acidic, NB = not basic)

3
New cards

1st Factor to predict products

  1. Arrows must line up

  • oxidizer in the left column must have an arrow pointing to the reducer column, or be reversible

  • reducer in right column must point left to oxidier, or be reversible

4
New cards

2nd factor to predict products

  1. both reducer and the oxidizer must be in the same medium

ie. Acidic (A) + Acidic (A)

Acidic (A) + Not-Basic (NB)

Basic (B) + Basic (B)

Basic (B) + Not-Acidic (NA)

New cards

3rd factor to predict products

  1. Redox reactions drive from stronger to weaker species

  • if reactants are stronger than products —> products favored

  • if reactants are weaker than products —> reactant favored

    • Oxidizers: stronger on top

    • reducers: stronger on the bottom
