Steroids
A type of lipid composed of 4 fused carbon rings
found in animal products
generally non polar and not water-soluble (hydrophobic)
different steroids have different arrangements of atoms and functional groups attached to their rings
Examples: Cholesterol estrogen, and Testosterone

Cholesterol
A type of steroid made by the body that also enters the body through our diet
make up part of the animal cell’s plasma membrane
Acts as a precursor for other steroids, such as estrogen and testosterone, and for bile salts

Sex hormones (Estrogen and Testosterone)
Steroid hormones made from cholesterol
act as chemical messengers within our bodies
have the same basic 4 ring steroid structure but different attached groups
These differences affect their function
HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein)
Known as good cholesterol
Carries excess cholesterol from the blood and tissues back toward the liver
helps remove excess cholesterol from the bloodstream
LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein)
Known as bad cholesterol
Carries cholesterol from the liver to body cells
Too much LDL cab cause cholesterol buildup in arteries
Can increase the risk of heart disease
