Generic file format

A file format that can be opened in suitable software on most platforms.

Comma separated values (.csv)

A text file format that saves data in the form of tables, separating data items with commas.

Text (.txt)

A text file format that is not formatted and can be opened in any word processor.

Rich text format (.rtf)

A text file format that saves some of the formatting within the text.

Graphics interchange format (.gif)

A file format that stores still or moving images using a smaller file size, commonly used in web pages.

Joint photographic expert group (.jpg or .jpeg)

A file format that stores still images using a smaller file size, commonly used in web pages.

Portable document format (.pdf)

A file format that converts a document into an image format, can contain clickable links and buttons, and can be protected from editing.

Portable network graphics (.png)

A file format that compresses graphics (images) files without any loss of image quality.

Moving pictures experts group layer 4 (.mp4)

A multimedia container used for storing video files, still images, audio files, subtitles, etc.

Moving pictures experts group layer 3 (.mp3)

A compressed file format used for storing audio files, cannot store still or moving images.

Cascading Style Sheets (.css)

A style sheet format attached to one or more web pages for website authoring.

Hypertext Markup Language (.htm or .html)

A text-based language used to create content that a web browser can display as a web page.

Roshal archive (.rar)

A container that holds almost any file type in a compressed format, used to reduce the number of bytes.

Zip (.zip)

A container that holds almost any file type in a compressed format, used to reduce the number of bytes and save storage space or transmission time.
