Flashcards covering the layers of human skin and the specific sensory receptors responsible for detecting temperature, touch, pain, and pressure.
Thermo-receptor
A sensory receptor in the skin that senses heat or cold.
Meissner's corpuscle
A cutaneous receptor that senses "touch".
Nociceptor
A sensory receptor that senses pain.
Pacinian corpuscle
A cutaneous receptor that senses "pressure".
Epidermis
The outermost layer of the skin.
Dermis
The middle layer of the skin located between the epidermis and the hypodermis.
Hypodermis
The layer situated below the dermis.
Pain
A sensation detected by nociceptors, illustrated by a sharp needle prick.
Touch
A light tactile sensation detected by Meissner's corpuscles, illustrated by a feather.
Pressure
A mechanical sensation detected deep within the skin by pacinian corpuscles.
