Transfer of Heat
The movement of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler one.
Conduction
The transfer of thermal energy through solids by particle collisions without movement of the medium.
Convection
The transfer of thermal energy in fluids (liquids and gases) by the circulation of currents.
Radiation
The transfer of thermal energy in the form of electromagnetic waves, which can occur in a vacuum.
Thermal Equilibrium
A state where there is no net heat transfer between objects at different temperatures.
Expansion and Contraction
The process where a substance expands when heated and contracts when cooled.
Bimetallic Strip
A device made of two metals that expand at different rates and are used in thermostats.
Kelvin (K)
The SI unit of temperature, where absolute zero is 0 K, equivalent to -273.15 °C.
Joule (J)
The SI unit of energy, commonly used to measure heat energy.
Density
The mass per unit volume of a substance, which changes with temperature due to expansion and contraction.
