Desktop
A computer equipped with a screen and keyboard designed for sustained performance at a fixed location.
Workstation
A computer equipped with a screen and keyboard designed for precision and reliability for professional tasks.
Server
A computer without a screen and keyboard designed for providing services to many users over a network.
Smartphone
A pocket-sized computer optimized for battery life and connectivity, such as an iPhone or Android phone.
Tablet
A touch-first computer with a larger screen, such as an iPad or drawing tablet.
IoT device
A network-connected device with a single purpose, such as a thermostat, smart doorbell, or fitness tracker.
Embedded computer
A computer built into another device, such as a coffee maker controller, automatic door sensor, or lamp dimmer chip.
IoT vs. Embedded Connectivity
IoT devices connect to a network to report data or receive commands, whereas embedded computers might not connect to anything and perform their job internally.
Redundancy
The use of extra components, such as extra power supplies and disks, in servers and critical systems to avoid failure.
