Atom
Basic unit of matter/element.
Can combine to form molecules.
Molecule
Made up of two or more atoms.
May contain one or more elemen.
Ions
“Charged Particles” formed when atoms or molecules gain or lose electrons. Charged atom.
Cation
Positive charged Ions. Forms when electrons are lost. Ex; (Na+)
Anion
Negative charged Ion. Forms when electrons are gained. Ex; (Cl–)
Compound
Substance made of two or more elements.
Molecular Compound
Compound made of nonmetal atoms that share electrons through covalent bond. It forms molecules.
A compound made of nonmetals bonded together by sharing electrons.
Ex; H₂O, CO₂
Ionic Bond
Elements = Metal + Nonmetal.
—The attraction between oppositely charged ions.—
Ex; Na⁺ and Cl⁻
Ionic Compound
Compound made of positive ions (cations) and negative ions (anions). Two to three elements.
The ions are held together or transfer the electron by electrostatic attraction.
Ex; “NaCl, MgO”
Covalent Bond
Elements = Nonmetal + Nonmetal
A bond formed when atoms share electrons.
Ex; The O–H bonds in H₂O
