Alphaproteobacteria
A class of oligotrophic bacteria containing obligate or facultative intracellular bacteria within the Rickettsias, Agrobacterium, Rhizobium, Brucella, Bartonella, and Ehrlichia genera.
Oligotrophic
Describing organisms that thrive in low-nutrient environments.
Rickettsias
Obligate intracellular bacteria that cause Rocky Mountain fever and typhus.
R. typhil
A bacterium that causes endemic typhus.
R. prowazekii
A bacterium that causes epidemic typhus.
R. rickettsia
A bacterium that causes Rocky Mountain fever.
Agrobacterium
A genus of plant pathogens that causes plant tumors.
A. tumefaciens
A plant pathogen species that causes plant tumors.
Rhizobium
A genus of bacteria that are mutualistic with plant roots.
Brucella
Facultative intracellular bacteria that cause brucellosis through contaminated milk.
Bartonella
Motile, pleomorphic, facultative intracellular bacteria that cause trench fever and cat scratch disease.
Ehrlichia
Obligate intracellular bacteria transmitted by ticks that cause ehrlichiosis, resulting in white blood cell destruction.
Betaproteobacteria
A class of eutrophic bacteria including the Neisseria, Bordetella, and Burkholderia genera.
Eutrophic
Describing organisms that thrive in high-nutrient environments.
Neisseria
Microaerophilic, diplococci bacteria that require moisture and high concentrations of carbon dioxide; cause STI gonorrhea and meningitis.
N. gonorrhoeae
A bacterial species that causes the STI gonorrhea.
N. meningitidis
A bacterial species that causes meningitis.
Bordetella
A genus of bacteria that causes whooping cough.
B. pertussis
A bacterial species that causes pertussis or whooping cough.
Burkholderia
A bacterial genus that causes disease in humans and horses.
Deltaproteobacteria
A class of sulfate-reducing bacteria within the Bdellovibrio, Desulfovibrio, and Myxobacteria genera.
Bdellovibrio
A genus of bacteria that causes parasitic infections to other gram-negative bacteria.
Desulfovibrio
A genus of bacteria that causes periodontal disease (gum disease).
Myxobacteria
A group of bacteria that forms myxospores or fruit bodies.
Epsiloproteobacteria
The smallest class of Proteobacteria, including microaerophilic bacteria within the Campylobacter and Helicobacter genera.
Campylobacter
A genus of microaerophilic bacteria within Epsiloproteobacteria.
C. jejuni
A bacterial species transmitted through chicken that causes food poisoning leading to enteritis in the small intestine.
Helicobacter
A genus of microaerophilic bacteria within Epsiloproteobacteria.
H. pylori
A bacterium that causes stomach cancer, stomach ulcers, and chronic gastritis.
Gammaprotebacteria
The largest class of Proteobacteria, including Pseudomonas, Vibrionales, Yersinia, and the Enterobacteriaceae family.
Pseudomonas
Non-fermenting bacteria that can cause infections, glow, and degrade xenobiotics.
P. aeruginosa
A bacterial species that causes wound, burn, and urinary tract infections in mechanical ventilating or cystic fibrosis patients.
P. fluorescens
A species of glowing bacteria within the Pseudomonas genus.
P. putida
A species of Pseudomonas that degrades xenobiotics.
Vibrionales
A bacterial group that causes gastrointestinal disease, electrolyte and water hypersecretion, cellulitis, and bloodborne infections, and can be mutualistic with squid.
V. cholerae
A bacterium in the Vibrionales group that causes water and electrolyte hypersecretion.
V. aliivibrio
A bacterium in the Vibrionales group that is mutualistic with squid.
V. vulnificus
A species in Vibrionales that causes cellulitis and bloodborne infections.
V. parahe
A bacterial species in Vibrionales that causes gastrointestinal disease.
Yersinia
A genus of bacteria that causes plagues and diarrhea.
Y. pestis
A bacterial species that causes bubonic or pneumonia plagues.
Enterobacteriaceae
A bacterial family that includes the Escherichia, Salmonella, Shigella, and Klebsiella genera.
Escherichia
A genus containing E. coli serotypes that can be mutualistic, cause travelers diarrhea, or produce shiga toxin causing hemorrhagic colitis or hemolytic uremic syndrome.
Salmonella
A genus containing serotypes that cause salmonellosis and typhoid fever.
S. enterica serovars
Serovars of Salmonella enterica that cause salmonellosis.

S. dysenteriae
A bacterial species that causes dysentery and gastrointestinal damage.
Klebsiella
A bacterial genus within the Enterobacteriaceae family that causes pneumonia.
