Berlin Wall
In 1961, thousands of East Berliners were crossing the border every day to flee communism. On the 13th August 1961, East German troops closed the border and stopped anyone from crossing. Barbed wire fences were put up and trains were stopped. Over the next week, the fence was replaced by a concrete wall that would remain in place for 30 years. In October 1961, an American diplomat was denied entry to East Berlin. This led to a standoff of tanks at Checkpoint Charlie. Kennedy and Khrushchev agreed to withdraw their tanks and the crisis was averted.
