Structure of an APA-formatted research report
Abstract, Intro, Methods, Results, Discussion
Language: Specificity
•Choose words that are accurate and free of bias when referring to participants
Language: Labels
•Respect preferences of participants
-Avoid labels and categorizing participants as objects (e.g., "the elderly")
-Avoid equating participants with their conditions (e.g., "depressives or stroke victims")
-Sensitivity should be given to any suggestion that one group is better than another
•Oral presentation
-Typically you have 15 minutes for your presentation including 12 minutes for talk and 3 minutes for questions
•Oral presentation recommendations
-Concentrate on only one or two points or a central theme
-Omit most of the specifics of the research design
- Do not read your presentation
-If you include audio visual presentations, make sure they are readable and comprehensible from a distance
-Practice giving the presentation to others to ensure that you stay within your time limit and that everything flows smoothly
Elevator Pitch
§5-minute summary of the research question and findings
-Practice giving a run-through of the poster so that you can identify the key points
