Aside
A character’s brief comment spoken to the audience that other characters supposedly cannot hear.

A scene that takes place earlier than the story’s current timeline.
Flat Character
A simple character with few traits who usually does not develop much.
Round Character
A complex, well-developed character with multiple traits and dimensions.
Foil
A character whose traits contrast with another character, highlighting their differences.
Foreshadowing
Hints or clues that suggest what will happen later in a story.
Frame Story
A story that contains another story within it.
Hyperbole
Extreme exaggeration used for emphasis or effect.
Interior Monologue
A character’s private thoughts presented directly to the reader.
In Medias Res
Beginning a story in the middle of the action rather than at the beginning.
Invocation of the Muse
An opening request for inspiration or guidance from a muse or higher power.
Local Color
Details about a specific region’s culture, language, customs, setting, or people.
Monologue
A long speech by one character, spoken to others or the audience.
Soliloquy
A speech in which a character alone reveals their private thoughts to the audience.
Antagonist
A person, group, or force that opposes, struggles against, or competes with another.
Comic relief
The use of a humorous character, scene, or line to break up heavy emotional tension or tragedy in a serious story or play.
Dialect
The distinct form of a language spoken by people in a particular region, social class, or group.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that compares 2 different things by stating one thing is another.
Personification
The attribution of human characteristics to a non-human entity.
Rhythm
The patterned flow of sound, created by combining stressed and unstressed syllables.
Simile
Compares two different things using words such as “like” or “as”
