VNE
Never Exceed Speed, defined as 154KIAS for the PA-28-181 Piper Archer III.
VNO
Maximum Structural Cruising Speed, defined as 125KIAS for the PA-28-181 Piper Archer III.
VO
Maximum Operating Maneuvering Speed, defined as 113KIAS at 2550lbs and 98KIAS at 1917lbs.
VFE
Maximum Flaps Extended Speed, defined as 102KIAS for the PA-28-181 Piper Archer III.
VGLIDE
Best Glide speed with flaps 0∘, defined as 76KIAS.
VR
Rotation Speed, defined as 60KIAS.
VREF
Reference Landing Speed, defined as 75KIAS.
VS0
Stall Speed in landing configuration with flaps 40∘, defined as 45KIAS.
VS1
Stall Speed in clean configuration with flaps 0∘, defined as 50KIAS.
VX
Best Angle of Climb Speed, defined as 64KIAS.
VY
Best Rate of Climb Speed, defined as 76KIAS.
Clearing Turns
Turns executed at a bank angle of approximately 30∘ with each turn being at least 90∘ (or one single 180∘ turn) performed before maneuvers to ensure the area is clear of traffic.
Positive Exchange of Flight Controls
A formal three-step process ('Your flight controls', 'My flight controls', 'Your flight controls') accompanied by visual verification used to transfer aircraft control between pilot and student.
Minimum Controllable Airspeed (MCA)
An airspeed at which any further increase in angle of attack, increase in load factor, or reduction in power would result in an immediate stall.
Cross-Control Stall
A stall occurring when flight controls are crossed (aileron in one direction and rudder in the opposite), often resulting from an overshot base-to-final approach turn.
Accelerated Stall
A stall that occurs at a higher indicated airspeed due to excessive maneuvering loads imposed by steep turns or abrupt changes in flight path.
Chandelles
A maximum performance 180∘ climbing turn maneuver that starts at cruise/VO airspeed and finishes wings level within 5knots of stall speed.
Lazy Eights
A flight maneuver consisting of symmetric 180∘ turns with constantly changing pitch and bank angle in an 8-shaped pattern across 45∘, 90∘, and 135∘ reference points.
Eights on Pylons
A commercial ground-reference maneuver requiring the pilot to maneuver around two pylons, adjusting altitude to maintain line-of-sight on the pylon at pivotal altitude.
Steep Spirals
A power-off gliding turn maneuver performed at steep bank angles (45∘ to 60∘) designed to dissipate altitude rapidly over a fixed ground point.
Five T's
An instrument procedural memory aid standing for Turn, Time, Twist, Throttle, and Talk.

Pattern A
An instrument practice procedure designed to develop aircraft control without deliberate thought using consecutive timed turns on cardinal headings.

Pattern B
An instrument practice maneuver incorporating simultaneous changes in airspeed, bank, power, and descending turns to prepare for holding patterns and procedure turns.
Vertical 'S'
An instrument maneuver consisting of continuous climbs and descents at 500FPM and 90KIAS paired with standard rate 180∘ turns.
