Filtration
The movement of water and solutes through a membrane from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure.
Hydrostatic pressure
The pressure exerted by liquids, which in the human body is provided by the pressure of blood.
Filtrate
The fluid and dissolved substances that pass through a membrane during the process of filtration.
Lugol's iodine reagent
A solution added to test for the presence of starch, which turns a blue/black color when starch is present.
Isotonic concentration
The concentration of a solution (such as corn syrup) that produces zero percent change in the mass of a cell or egg.
Percent change in mass formula
Calculated as (Initial MassChange in Mass)×100%
Axillary
The anatomical term for the armpit.
Brachial
The anatomical term for the arm.
Popliteal
The anatomical term for the posterior region of the knee.
Gluteal
The anatomical term for the buttocks.
Ophthalmic
The anatomical term referring to the eyes.
Cervical
The anatomical term referring to the neck.
Frontal plane
A plane that divides the body into anterior and posterior portions.
Horizontal plane
A plane that divides the body into superior and inferior portions.
Midsagittal plane
A plane that divides the body into equal right and left portions.
Sagittal plane
A plane that divides the body into right and left portions.
Ocular lens
Two lenses located in the binocular tube of a microscope that magnify the image by 10×.
Iris diaphragm
A component of a compound microscope that controls brightness and the amount of light passing through the specimen.
Fine adjustment knob
A microscope control used to fine-tune the focus of the image.
Coarse adjustment knob
A microscope control that focuses the image by raising and lowering the body tube.
Condenser
A group of lenses on a microscope that concentrate and direct the light beam from the lamp to the specimen.
Revolving nosepiece
The part of a microscope that holds the objective lenses and allows the user to switch between them.
Mechanical stage adjustment knob
A control that holds microscope slides in place and moves them across both horizontal axes.
10% bleach solution
A cleaning solution used to wash lab work areas if specimens, preserved animals, or fresh animal tissues have been used.
