Festoon
An unwind component that acts as an accumulator allowing the machine to slow down to 200fpm for splicing, and functions as a dancer to control unwind tension during the line run phase.
Unwind Tension Rolls
Three rolls located after the unwinds; the first two pre-tension the sheet after the splice bar moves to splice position, while the third controls unwind tension.
Sheet Extrusion
The growth in sheet width caused by TM roll build, which requires positioning the sheet toward the drive side to maintain proper alignment.
Gravure Roll Edge Shower
A water shower in the printer section fitted with a .067 tip used to clean and prevent build-up on the edge of the gravure roll.
Backing Roll Edge Shower
A water shower in the printer section fitted with a .017 tip used to clean and prevent build-up on the edge of the backing roll.
VENUS Print Fluid Composition
A print fluid formulation composed of 99.8% Latex, .2% Caustic, 2.3% (of Latex) Defoamer, and .88% (of Latex) Plasticizer.
VIVA Print Fluid Composition
A print fluid formulation composed of 91.5% Latex, 4.58% PWS, 2.28% TWS, .55% Caustic, along with Defoamer and Plasticizer.
% Solids
The percentage of solid chemical mass in a mixture, with target levels set at ~31% for VIVA and ~16% for VENUS.
GMT (Geo-metric Mean Tensile)
The measurement representing paper strength, which increases when print fluid % solids is increased and decreases when % solids is lowered.
% Add-on
The percentage of print fluid transferred onto the base sheet during the printing process.
Crepe Dryer Target Sheet Temperature
A setpoint of 200 degrees maintained by adjusting thermal fluid or hood temperatures, measured as an average from four individual dryer exit sensors.
Crepe Blade
A blade in the OLU process used to create microfolds in the paper for stretch and softness, and to transfer paper off the crepe dryer.
Centerwind Assist Draw
The drive control parameter that provides torque to create tension on the incoming sheet to the reel; increasing draw increases tension, while excessive reduction causes loose winds and wrinkles.
Base Sheet Age Effects (OLU Process)
Processing issues resulting from aged base sheets, including floppy edges/wrinkles, out-of-round rolls, and unwind tension variations.
Minimum Backing Roll Load
20pli, which is the lowest allowable load limit when decreasing speed while maintaining GMT.
