they moved closely with the shore and people on land saw them and ran away

Kamehameha went to Pāpaʻi to search for people

He saw some guys on the shore.

One of the guys said, “I see Kamehameha on the canoe! Run!!”

The other guy said, “He is searching for people to sacrifice on the temple!”

Kamehameha chased them (2) upland.
ʻōlelo…
The two guys say to each other, “Let’s run up that hill!”
ʻōlelo…
On the hill, they grabbed rocks to throw at him.

Kamehameha dodged ( alo) their rocks, too easy, but his foot got stuck in the smooth lava rocks.

Another guy, Ka iniki, ran to Kamehameha with a paddle. He lifted the paddle up to hit (hahau) the chief on the head.

After the hit, Kamehameha toppled over.
