The process of acquiring, training, appraising, and compensating employees, and of attending to their labor relations, health and safety, and fairness concerns (Dessler, 2023).
Modern HRM Shift
A shift occurring in the 1980s where companies moved beyond basic tasks like payroll to seeing employees as valuable assets rather than just costs.
Recruiter
An HR role responsible for finding the right people to hire using advertisements, websites, and community contacts.
EEO Representative
An HR professional who ensures that hiring and workplace practices are fair and follow the law.
Job Analyst
An HR professional who studies what each job involves and writes job descriptions.
Compensation Manager
A role responsible for deciding how much employees get paid and managing benefits like health insurance.
Training Specialist
An HR professional who organizes training to help employees learn new skills.
Labor Relations Specialist
An HR role that helps the company work with unions and manage employee relations.
Shared Services
A modern HR organization model where a central team handles tasks like payroll and leave for all departments across the company.
Self-Service Systems
Online tools or portals that allow employees to solve HR issues independently, such as downloading forms or choosing training programs.
Corporate HR Teams
Specialized teams that assist top managers with big-picture planning and organizational strategy.
Embedded HR Teams
HR staff who work directly inside departments (like sales or production) to solve problems and support team needs like talent management.
Line Authority
The power to give direct orders to employees, typically held by managers like a sales manager.
Staff Authority
The power to give advice to others, which is the typical role of an HR manager suggesting procedures or tests.
