Almost Null Family (Famille presque nulle)
A family (λi)i∈I of scalars in K for which the set of non-zero elements {i∈I∣λi=0} is finite, with the set of all such families denoted K(I).
Linearly Independent Family (Famille libre) - General Case
A family (ei)i∈I of vectors in E such that for every almost null family of scalars (λi)i∈I∈K(I), ∑i∈Iλiei=0⟹∀i∈I,λi=0.
Linear Span / Subspace Spanned by a Subset (Vect(A))
The smallest vector subspace (with respect to inclusion) of E containing the subset A, consisting of all linear combinations of elements of A.
Spanning Family / Generating Family (Famille génératrice)
A family (e1,…,en) of vectors in E whose linear span equals a vector subspace F, meaning Vect(e1,…,en)=F.
Super-family (Sur-famille)
A family F of vectors is a super-family of F′ when F′ is a sub-family of F; any super-family of a spanning family of E is also spanning for E.

A family of vectors in a vector space E (or subspace F) that is simultaneously linearly independent (free) and spanning (generating).
Family of Coordinates (Famille des coordonnées)
The unique family of scalars (λi)i∈I such that a vector x∈E decomposes as x=∑i∈Iλiei relative to a given basis B=(ei)i∈I.
Finite-Dimensional Vector Space (Espace de dimension finie)
A vector space E that admits a finite spanning (generating) family.
Dimension of a Vector Space (dim(E))
The common number of vectors contained in any basis of a finite-dimensional vector space E.
Rank of a Family of Vectors (rg(e1,…,en))
The dimension of the vector subspace spanned by the family, defined as rg(e1,…,en)=dim(Vect(e1,…,en)).
Rank of a Linear Map (rg(f))
The dimension of the image of a linear map f, defined as rg(f)=dim(Im(f)) when Im(f) is finite-dimensional.
Isomorphic Vector Spaces (Espaces isomorphes)
Two vector spaces E and F for which there exists an isomorphism (a bijective linear map) from E to F; if E is finite-dimensional, this is equivalent to F being finite-dimensional and dim(E)=dim(F).
Sum of Subspaces (∑i=1nFi)
The vector subspace of E consisting of all elements x that can be written in the form x=∑i=1nxi with (x1,…,xn)∈∏i=1nFi.
Direct Sum of Subspaces (⨁i=1nFi)
A sum of subspaces for which the map (x1,…,xn)↦∑i=1nxi is injective, equivalently stating that ∑i=1nxi=0E⟹x1=⋯=xn=0E.
