What is mental health?
The current state of a person’s psychological wellbeing and functioning
What is a mental Health problem?
Short term disruption to thoughts, feeling or behaviours and may affect functioning
What is mentally healthy?
High levels of resilience and stable functioning
What is a mental illness?
A diagnosable condition that can be treated. It is severe and long-lasting, and significantly interferes with daily functioning.
What is the mental health continuum?
A spectrum from good mental health to mental illness. Helps understand and spot different mental health states in people.
What is a risk factor?
Any factor that may contribute to poor mental health. Eg: genetics, stress, toxic relationships, negative mindset

Social Isolation - blocking out friends and friends make you happy

What is a protective factor?
A factor that may prevent poor mental health

Friendships- Talking to her old friends online and making new connections at hockey
What is resilience?
The ability to cope with adversity and bounce back positively after challenges

Anxiety Disorder- ongoing worry and emotional distress from moving.

No, sadness is temporary and he was still able to function
What is the DSM-5?
A diagnostic manual for mental disorder and is used by psychologists/psychiatrists.
What information is not in the DSM-5?
Treatment guidelines and recommendations for managing mental disorders
What is an advantage of labelling mental illness?
Gives access to care and support, and give you clarity
What is a disadvantage of labelling mental illness?
Stigma, discrimination, reduced help-seeking
What is a stigma?
A stigma is a negative perception about a person, and can lead to discrimination.
