What is the smallest unit of matter?
Atoms
What is an element?
A pure substance consisting of only one type of atom. (Carbon, Oxygen, Sodium)
What charge does a proton have, does it have Mass, and where is it located?
It has a positive charge, has Mass, and is in the nucleus
What charge does a neutron have, does it have Mass, and where is it located?
Has no charge, has Mass, and is in the nucleus.
What charge does a Electron have, does it have Mass, and where is it located?
It has a negative charge, has mass, and its located outside of the nucleus.
Where is the nucleus found?
The nucleus is found at the center of an atom, containing protons and neutrons. Mass of the atom
What is an Atomic number?
The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom. (smaller number of the periodic table)
What is Atomic mass?
The number of protons + the neutrons in a nucleaus. (larger number on the periodic table)
What is an Isotope?
An isotope is a variant of an atom that has the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
What is an Ion?
An atom that has gained/lost electrons.
What is a compound?
A substance formed when two or more different elements chemically bond together.(H20, C6H1206, NaCl)
What is a molecule?
Smallest part on an compound
What is an Ionic bond?
Ionic bonds occur when electrons are transferred from one atom to another.(gained/lost)
What is a covalent bond?
A type of chemical bond where two atoms share pairs of electrons.
What is a hydrogen bond?
a magnetic attraction between molecules. weak
What is van der waals force?
A force that holds molecules together
What is polarity?
It is when electrons are shared unequally
What is coheison?
A property of water where water molecules stick to water molecules. (same)
What is Adhesion
A property of water where water molecules stick to other molecules. (different)
What is a mixture?
Its where two or more molecules are combined physically
What is a solute
A solute gets dissolved
What is a solvent
A solvent does the dissolving
What is a solution
A solution is when a solute is dissolved in a solvent
What is suspension
A suspension is when two things are mixed but no dissolving takes place
What is PH
Ph is a measure of how many hydrogen ions are in a solution
What are acids?
Acids have a high concentration of H+ ions and a low concentration of OH-
What are bases?
Bases have a high concentration of OH- ions and a low concentration of H+ ions.
What is a buffer?
A buffer is a weak acid or base that reacts with a strong acid or base to neutralize it
Why are buffers important?
Because they are important for homeostasis(ensuring stability) in living things.
What elements make up carbohydrates?
C, H, O
