Midterm 1 Terminology

Plaintiff

a person who brings a case against another in a court of law

Defendant

an individual, company, or institution sued or accused in a court of law

Jury

a body of people sworn to give a verdict in a legal case on the basis of evidence submitted to them in court

Judge

a public officer appointed to decide cases in a court of law

Expert Witness

a person who is permitted to testify at a trial because of special knowledge or proficiency in a particular field that is relevant to the case

Chain of Custody

chronological documentation showing the custody, control, transfer, analysis, and disposition of physical or electronic evidence

Spoliation

the destruction, alteration, or failure to preserve evidence

Electronically Stored Information (ESI)

Any data that is created, modified, communicated, or stored in digital form
