Computer
A multipurpose device that accepts input, processes data, stores data, and produces output, all according to a series of stored instructions.
Input
Whatever is typed, submitted, or transmitted to a computer.
Output
The result produced by a computer.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
The component in a computer that handles processing by performing calculations, modifying documents and pictures, drawing graphs, and sorting lists of words or numbers.

IPOS Model Diagram
A diagram showing the computer framework composed of Input (words, numbers), Process (calculate, sort), Output (documents, images), and Store (data files, software).
Computer Program
The instructions that tell a digital device how to carry out processing tasks.
Software
The collection of programs that sets up a computer to do a specific task.
Stored Program
A concept meaning that a series of instructions for a computing task can be loaded into a computer's memory.
Application Software
A set of computer programs that helps a person carry out a task.
System Software
Computer software whose primary purpose is to help the computer system monitor itself in order to function efficiently.
Operating System (OS)
An example of system software that monitors and manages computer functions.
Development Tools
Software tools used for creating software applications, Web sites, operating systems, and utilities.

A chart showing the main types of software: Application Software, System Software, and Development Tools.
System Board
A circuit board, also called a motherboard or main board, that houses all essential chips and provides connecting circuitry between them.

An overview of a motherboard showing mounted components including processor, control chips, memory, audio processing, and input/output circuitry.
Form Factor
Refers to the size and dimensions of a device or components, such as circuit boards and system units.
System Unit
Tech-speak for the part of a digital device that holds the system board.
Supercomputers
Computers considered the fastest in the world at the time of construction, used for complex tasks such as breaking codes, modeling weather systems, and simulating nuclear explosions.
Portables
Digital devices that run on battery power with all components contained in a single case for easy transportation.

Laptop
A small and lightweight portable computer with a clamshell design and a keyboard as the base, also referred to as a notebook computer.
Tablet Computer
A portable computing device featuring a touch-sensitive screen used for input and output and running a specialized OS.

Slate Tablet
A tablet configuration, such as the Apple iPad, featuring a narrow-frame touch-sensitive screen that lacks a physical keyboard.
