Iliopsoas
A medial thigh muscle originating at T12, L1-5, and the iliac fossa; inserting at the lesser trochanter of the femur; acting to flex the thigh and lumbar vertebrae; innervated by the femoral nerve and spinal nerves L1-3.
Sartorius
A medial thigh muscle originating at the anterior superior iliac spine; inserting at the proximal, medial tibia; acting to flex and laterally rotate the thigh, and flex the leg; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Gracilis
A medial thigh muscle originating at the pubis, near the symphysis; inserting at the proximal, medial tibia; acting to adduct the thigh and flex the leg; innervated by the obturator nerve.
Pectineus
A medial thigh muscle originating at the pubic crest; inserting at the pectineal line of the femur; acting to adduct the thigh; innervated by the femoral and obturator nerves.
Adductor brevis
A medial thigh muscle originating at the pubis; inserting at the linea aspera at the proximal portion of the femur; acting to adduct, flex, and laterally rotate the thigh; innervated by the obturator nerve.
Adductor longus
A medial thigh muscle originating at the pubis; inserting at the linea aspera at the middle portion of the femur; acting to adduct, flex, and laterally rotate the thigh; innervated by the obturator nerve.
Adductor magnus
A medial thigh muscle originating at the pubis and ischium; inserting at the linea aspera and adductor tubercle of the distal femur; acting to adduct, extend, and laterally rotate the thigh; innervated by the obturator and tibial nerves.
Rectus femoris
An anterior thigh (quadriceps femoris) muscle originating at the anterior inferior iliac spine; inserting at the tibial tuberosity by the patellar ligament; acting to flex the thigh and extend the leg; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Vastus lateralis
An anterior thigh (quadriceps femoris) muscle originating at the greater trochanter of the femur and linea aspera of the femur; inserting at the tibial tuberosity by the patellar ligament; acting to extend the leg; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Vastus intermedius
An anterior thigh (quadriceps femoris) muscle originating at the proximal, anterior femur; inserting at the tibial tuberosity by the patellar ligament; acting to extend the leg; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Vastus medialis
An anterior thigh (quadriceps femoris) muscle originating at the linea aspera of the femur, on the medial side; inserting at the tibial tuberosity by the patellar ligament; acting to extend the leg; innervated by the femoral nerve.
Tensor fasciae latae
A posterior/lateral thigh muscle originating at the anterior superior iliac spine; inserting at the iliotibial band of fasciae latae to the lateral condyle of the tibia; acting to flex, abduct, and medially rotate the thigh; innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.
Gluteus maximus
A posterior/lateral thigh muscle originating at the outer iliac blade, iliac crest, sacrum, and coccyx; inserting at the gluteal tuberosity of the femur and iliotibial band of fasciae latae; acting to extend, abduct, and laterally rotate the thigh, and brace the knee; innervated by the inferior gluteal nerve.
Gluteus medius
A posterior/lateral thigh muscle originating at the outer iliac blade; inserting at the greater trochanter of the femur; acting to abduct and medially rotate the thigh; innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.
Gluteus minimus
A posterior/lateral thigh muscle originating at the outer iliac blade; inserting at the greater trochanter of the femur; acting to abduct and medially rotate the thigh; innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.
Biceps femoris
A hamstring muscle originating at the ischial tuberosity and linea aspera of the femur; inserting at the head and shaft of the fibula and lateral condyle of the tibia; acting to extend the thigh and flex the leg; innervated by the tibial and fibular nerves.
Semitendinosus
A hamstring muscle originating at the ischial tuberosity; inserting at the proximal, medial tibia; acting to extend the thigh and flex the leg; innervated by the tibial nerve.
Semimembranosus
A hamstring muscle originating at the ischial tuberosity; inserting at the medial condyle of the tibia and collateral ligament; acting to extend the thigh and flex the leg; innervated by the tibial nerve.
Tibialis anterior
An anterior leg muscle originating at the tibia and interosseous membrane; inserting at metatarsal 1 and cuneiform 1; acting to dorsiflex and invert the foot; innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
Extensor digitorum longus
An anterior leg muscle originating at the lateral condyle of the tibia and shaft of the fibula; inserting at the middle and distal phalanges of digits 2-5; acting to extend toes 2-5, dorsiflex and evert the foot; innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
Extensor hallucis longus
An anterior leg muscle originating at the anterior shaft of the fibula and interosseous membrane; inserting at the distal phalanx of the hallux (big toe); acting to extend the hallux, dorsiflex the foot, and invert the foot; innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
Fibularis longus
A lateral leg muscle originating at the head of the fibula and lateral condyle of the tibia; inserting at metatarsal 1 and cuneiform 1; acting to plantar flex and evert the foot; innervated by the superficial fibular nerve.
Fibularis brevis
A lateral leg muscle originating at the shaft of the fibula; inserting at metatarsal 5; acting to plantar flex and evert the foot; innervated by the superficial fibular nerve.
Fibularis tertius
A lateral leg muscle originating at the fibula and interosseous membrane; inserting at the dorsum of metatarsal 5; acting to dorsiflex and evert the foot; innervated by the deep fibular nerve.
Gastrocnemius
A posterior leg muscle originating at the condyles of the femur; inserting at the calcaneus by the calcaneal tendon; acting to flex the leg and plantar flex the foot; innervated by the tibial nerve.
Soleus
A posterior leg muscle originating at the posterior, proximal tibia and fibula; inserting at the calcaneus by the calcaneal tendon; acting to plantar flex the foot; innervated by the tibial nerve.
Popliteus
A posterior leg muscle originating at the lateral condyle of the femur; inserting at the proximal tibia; acting to flex the leg; innervated by the tibial nerve.
Tibialis posterior
A posterior leg muscle originating at the interosseous membrane, tibia, and fibula; inserting at metatarsals 2-5, navicular, cuneiforms, and cuboid; acting to plantar flex and invert the foot; innervated by the tibial nerve.
