Psychoanalysis
A comprehensive personality theory and therapy developed by Sigmund Freud that emphasizes the profound influence of unconscious motives, childhood experiences, and internal conflicts on human behavior.
Levels of Mental Life: Conscious
The mental level containing all the thoughts, feelings, and sensations that a person is currently aware of at any given moment.
Levels of Mental Life: Preconscious
The mental level containing information, memories, and knowledge that we are not currently thinking about, but can easily bring into our conscious awareness.
Levels of Mental Life: Unconscious
The deepest level of the mind containing drives, urges, repressed memories, and trauma that are outside of our awareness but heavily drive our daily behavior.
Province of the Mind: Id
The completely unconscious, pleasure-seeking structure of personality present from birth that demands immediate gratification of basic drives and desires (pleasure principle).
Province of the Mind: Ego
The conscious/rational executive of the personality that operates on the reality principle, balancing the demands of the id, superego, and the external world.
Province of the Mind: Superego
The moral and ethical component of personality representing society's standards, rules, and internal values learned from parents and environment (conscience and ego-ideal).
Reality Principle
The guiding principle of the ego that functions to test reality and delay immediate gratification until an appropriate and safe outlet can be found.
Defense Mechanisms
Unconscious psychological strategies and tactics used by the ego to protect the mind and self from anxiety, distress, and painful internal conflicts.
Repression
The most basic defense mechanism where the ego blocks threatening or traumatic thoughts, memories, and impulses from entering the conscious mind.
Psychosexual Stages of Development
Freud’s theory that personality develops through a sequence of fixed stages during childhood, centered around specific erogenous zones (Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latency, Genital).
Oedipus / Electra Complex
A crucial psychological conflict occurring during the phallic stage where a child develops unconscious sexual desires for the opposite-sex parent and rivalry toward the same-sex parent.
Fixation
A state where a person remains psychically stuck or arrested at a particular psychosexual stage due to over-gratification or frustration during childhood.
Psychoanalytic Therapy / Free Association
A therapeutic technique used by Freud where patients freely express whatever comes to their mind to help uncover and bring repressed unconscious materials into consciousness for healing.
