Acceleration due to Gravity on Earth
9.8m/s2 (or 9.8N/kg)
Vector Quantity
A quantity that has both magnitude and direction, such as force, weight, and momentum.
Air Resistance
The friction felt by an object moving through the air, such as a rocket going up after launch.
Rolling Friction
The friction felt by rolling objects, such as the wheels of a car going down a ramp.
Sliding Friction
The friction felt by objects sliding past each other, such as air hockey pucks sliding across a table.
Newton's 1st Law
The law stating that an object at rest will stay at rest until an unbalanced force is acted upon it.
Newton's 2nd Law
The law stating that the force acting on an object is equal to the object's mass times the acceleration rate (F=ma).
Newton's 3rd Law
The law stating that for every action there is an equal in strength and opposite in direction reaction.
Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation
The law determining the gravitational attraction between two objects with mass separated by a distance; force increases with mass and decreases with distance.
Inertia
An object's resistance to a change in motion, which has a direct relationship with mass (increasing mass increases inertia).
Conservation of Momentum
The concept that the total momentum before a collision equals the total momentum after the collision.
Momentum Unit
kg⋅m/s
Net Force Unit
Newtons (N)
Acceleration Unit
m/s2
