Angelo Guiseppe Roncalli was born on 1881 in Italy in a large, poor Catholic peasant family. After being ordained a priest in 1904, he served as an army chaplain during World War I, an Apostolic Delegate in Bulgaria, Greece and Turkey, a Cardinal and Patriarch of Venice, before being elected Pope in 1958.
