What does CAR-T stand for?
Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell.
Define CAR T therapy
Genetically modified T cells that express a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) designed to recognise specific antigens on tumour cells. Recognition leads to T-cell activation and proliferation, and ultimately significant and durable destruction of malignant cells.
Why are CAR T cells called a “living drug”?
Because they tend to persist for long periods of time in the patient (they keep multiplying and surveilling, unlike a conventional drug that is cleared).
Where do CAR T cells usually come from
Generally made from the patient’s own (autologous) blood cells
