The ‘A’ rule in gustar sentences.

  1. Whenever you name the specific person doing the liking, you must start the sentence with A. In grammar terms, this is called the Personal "A." [1] Without it, the sentence is broken.

  • ❌ Wrong: Juan le gusta el chocolate. (Sounds like: "Juan, chocolate is pleasing to him.")

  • Right: A Juan le gusta el chocolate. (Literally: "To Juan, chocolate is pleasing.")

  1. When you don't use a person's name (like Juan or Sofia) and want to use a pronoun instead (like me, you, or him), adding A changes the words you are allowed to use.

Most of them look like normal subject pronouns, but "Yo" and "Tú" change completely into mí and ti:

  • ❌ Wrong: A yo me gusta... / A tú te gusta...

  • Right: A mí me gusta... / A ti te gusta...
