The ratio of the oven-dry mass of aggregate in air to the mass of an equal volume of water, calculated as B−CA by accounting for the volume of both permeable and impermeable internal pores.
Bulk Specific Gravity SSD
The specific gravity of an aggregate calculated as B−CB, assuming all permeable pore spaces within the constituent particles are completely filled with water.
Apparent Specific Gravity
The relative density of the solid material comprising aggregate particles, calculated as A−CA, excluding the permeable pore space accessible to water.

Cone Mold and Tamper Test (ASTM C128)
A test procedure using a conical frustum mold and a 340±15g tamper dropped 25 times from 5mm above the fine aggregate surface; slight slumping upon vertical removal of the mold confirms the saturated surface-dry (SSD) condition.

A calibrated vessel, such as a 500cm3 volumetric flask with a pycnometer top, used in ASTM C128 to determine the volume, specific gravity, and absorption of fine aggregates.
Bulk Unit Weight (ASTM C29)
The mass of aggregate per unit volume of the bulk material (M=VG−T), encompassing both the solid volume of individual particles and the volume of voids between particles.
Voids in Aggregate
The inter-particle space within a bulk unit volume of aggregate that is not occupied by solid mineral matter, calculated as [S×W(S×W)−M]×100.
Aggregate Compaction Methods (ASTM C29)
Standardized methods to consolidate aggregate: rodding is used for aggregates with nominal maximum size ≤37.5mm, jigging is used for sizes from 37.5mm to 125mm, and shoveling is used to determine loose bulk density.

Concrete Slump Test Procedure
A field and laboratory test (ASTM C143) measuring the consistency and workability of freshly mixed Portland cement concrete, executed in three layers tamped 25 times each and completed within 2.5minutes.
Slump Mold
A rigid metal mold in the shape of a frustum of a cone with an open top diameter of 102mm (4in.), a bottom diameter of 203mm (8in.), and a height of 305mm (12in.).
Concrete Batching
The precise proportioning and measuring of concrete constituent materials—portland cement, water, fine aggregate, and coarse aggregate—either by weight or by volume prior to mixing.
Concrete Curing
The process of maintaining adequate moisture content and favorable temperature conditions in freshly placed concrete to allow continuous cement hydration and hardening over time.
Saturated Limewater Curing
A standard curing method where cylindrical concrete specimens are immersed in lime-saturated water at 23±1.7∘C to insulate specimens against temperature swings, prevent moisture loss, and avoid lime leaching.
Compressive Strength of Concrete (fc′)
The capacity of a hardened concrete cylindrical specimen to withstand axial compressive loads, calculated as fc′=APmax and used as the primary benchmark for concrete quality and structural design.

Concrete Cylinder Fracture Patterns (ASTM C39)
The six recognized fracture modes observed in crushed concrete cylinders: (1) cones on both ends, (2) cone on one end and vertical cracks, (3) vertical cracks, (4) diagonal fracture, (5) side fracture, and (6) side fractures with pointed ends.
Modulus of Rupture (MOR)
The flexural tensile strength of an unreinforced concrete beam resisting failure under bending moments, calculated as R=bd2PL when fracture occurs within the middle third of the span.

Third-Point Loading Configuration (ASTM C78)
A beam testing apparatus setup that applies two equal vertical loads at the third points (3L) of the span length, creating a central region of pure bending moment with zero shear force.
Gross Area Compressive Strength (Concrete Masonry)
The compressive strength of a concrete masonry unit determined by dividing the maximum compressive load (Pmax) by the total cross-sectional area bounded by external dimensions (Ag=L×W).
Net Area Compressive Strength (Concrete Masonry)
The compressive strength of a concrete masonry unit determined by dividing the maximum compressive load (Pmax) by its net solid bearing area (An=HVn).
