what are steriods + how they can be made + how they have an effect
they are hormones that are derived from mevalonic acid
the enyme that produces mevalonic acid ( HMG-CoA reductase ) is the drug target for satins which are used to treat high cholesterol
the first steriod is lanosterol which is converted into cholesterol
then several different classes of steriods hormones are derived from cholesterol by modification of its structure
the different steriods bind to specific steriod receptors allowing the transcription of genes
describe the formation of steriods/ whats the step by step process

describe the basic structure of steriods

describe the 4 main glucocorticoids + their functions

what are non steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs ( NSAIDS )

describe how aspirin acts as a non steriodal anti inflammatory drug

describe how ibuprofen and related drugs like naproxen work as non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs

describe the activation of ibuprofen ( r->s )
when ibuprogen is first bought its found in a mixture of its r and s enantiomer
this is bacuse the r can be converted into the s- pharmacological activation
the body attaches CoA onto the r enantiomer to creat an intermediate
then the molecule changes its 3d arragngment to form the s enantiomer
finally the CoA is removed

what is diclofenac
its an NSAID used to reduce pain inflammation and swelling

whats the main side effect of drugs that have activity against COX 2 e.g ibuprofen diclofenac , naproxen and aspirin and other selective inhibitors
they can lead to cardiovascular complications
what’s the main side effect of drugs that inhibit the COX1 enzymes
they can lead to gastrointestinal complications
