Figurative Language

Language used when words mean something other than their literal meaning.

Simile

A comparison of two unlike things using "like" or "as".

Metaphor

A comparison of two unlike things that says one thing is another.

Hyperbole

An exaggeration that can't possibly be true.

Personification

Giving human qualities to nonhuman things.

Alliteration

The repetition of the same initial consonant sound.

Onomatopoeia

Words whose sounds suggest their meaning.

Idiom

A group of words whose meaning isn't understood from their literal meaning.

Allusion

A reference to a famous person, place, or event.

Oxymoron

A phrase whose words contradict each other with opposite meanings.
