Experiential Learning Model
A learning framework that engages learners through the interconnected stages of experiencing, sharing, processing, generalizing, and applying.
Container
The surrounding environment, people, challenge level, facilitation, and space provided to allow learners to construct their own meaning from an experience.
Reflection (Rodgers, 2002)
A meaning-making process drawing on John Dewey that identifies relationships and continuities within an experience, between different experiences, and between experience and existing knowledge.
Zones of Comfort framework
A model showing that challenge levels belong to the learner rather than the activity itself, where an activity may leave one person in comfort (Zone 1), stretch another, or push someone too far (Zone 3).
Ritualized reflection (Boud and Walker, 1998)
A problematic pattern in which learners merely go through expected motions or give answers they think they are supposed to provide rather than engaging in genuine reflection.
Reflective journaling (Deepa and Mansurali, 2022)
A practice that shifts ownership of learning toward the learner and supports the transition from surface learning to deeper evaluation and change.
Learning transfer
The process of using insights gained from reflecting on a past experience to actively choose and shape actions in future experiences.
Room to Reflect
The author's pre-seminar lesson arguing that experience alone does not cause learning, using the metaphor of looking back down a trail to describe how reflection creates meaning.
5-4-3-2-1 sensory meditation
A morning river facilitation prompting participants to engage their senses, illustrating how facilitators set up the environment without determining individual outcomes.
Continuity of experience (Hartmann et al., 2023)
The concept that reflection connects distinct experiences together, allowing learning to carry forward across contexts rather than remaining isolated.
