How do you handle a change in principle, a change in estimate, and an error correction?

A change in principle is applied retrospectively. A change in estimate is applied prospectively. An error correction restates prior periods, and switching from a non-GAAP to a GAAP method counts as an error.

How is treasury stock recorded under each method?

  • Cost method: debit Treasury stock at cost. A reissue above cost credits APIC–treasury stock. A reissue below cost debits APIC–treasury stock first, then retained earnings.

  • Par method: debit Treasury stock at par and remove the original APIC from that issuance. Any excess paid comes out of APIC–treasury stock or retained earnings.
