Organizational Leadership
An approach wherein leaders set strategic goals for the organization while motivating individuals to successfully carry out assignments, balancing the welfare of individual members and the group as a whole without sacrificing either.
Technical Skills
Skills referring to specific types of processes or techniques, such as sending an e-mail or preparing a PowerPoint presentation.
Human Skills
The ability to work effectively with people and build teamwork; also referred to as people skills or soft skills.
Conceptual Skills
The ability to think in terms of models, frameworks, and broad relationships, such as long-range plans.
Leadership Function (School Head)
The responsibility of leading the school and community to formulate the vision, mission, goals, and school improvement plan, providing the big picture for connection and meaning.
Management Function (School Head)
The responsibility of ensuring that needed resources are present and individuals doing the job are qualified and available, focusing on day-to-day implementation details.
Manager
An individual whose role is transactional and work-focused; they administer, allocate tasks, lead subordinates through circles of power and authority, and 'do things right' by maintaining the status quo.
Leader
An individual whose role is transformational and people-focused; they innovate, develop vision, lead followers through circles of influence and inspiration, and 'do the right thing' by shaping culture and driving integrity.
Autocratic Leadership
A leadership style characterized by leaders making decisions entirely by themselves.
Consultative Leadership
A leadership style that involves consulting organizational participants for input, while the leader retains final decision-making power.
Democratic Leadership
A leadership style that allows members of the organization to fully participate in decision making.
Laissez-faire Leadership
Also called free-rein leadership style; a style that avoids responsibility and leaves members to establish their own work, which leads to the 'kanya-kanya mentality.'
Kanya-kanya Mentality
A recognized weakness of the Filipino Character resulting from a laissez-faire leadership style, where individuals look out only for themselves.
Servant Leadership
A leadership style based on ethical and caring behavior that seeks to involve others in decision making, enhances worker growth, and improves organizational life quality.
Transformational Leadership
A leadership style that initiates positive organizational changes by collaboratively establishing a new vision and mobilizing members toward achieving it.
S1 Selling / Directing
A situational leadership style applied when individuals are novice but enthusiastic, lacking the specific skills required for the job and task at hand.
S2 Telling / Coaching
A situational leadership style applied when individuals possess greater ability to do the task, but are demotivated or unwilling to perform the job or task.
S3 Participating / Supporting
A situational leadership style applied when individuals are experienced and able to execute the task, but lack confidence or willingness to take on responsibility.
S4 Delegating
A situational leadership style applied when individuals demonstrate high readiness—being experienced, comfortable, able, willing, and confident to execute the task and assume full responsibility.
