Vocabulary flashcards covering the element classifications, group designations, state representations, and notation conventions used in the Periodic Table of Elements.
Atomic Weight in Parentheses
The notation used on the periodic table for elements with no stable isotopes, where the value in parentheses represents the mass number of the isotope with the longest half-life.
Alkali Metals
The chemical group of metallic elements located in Group 1 of the periodic table, consisting of lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium, and francium (excluding hydrogen).
Alkaline Earth Metals
The group of electropositive metallic elements found in Group 2 of the periodic table, comprising beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium.
Transition Metals
The central block of metallic elements spanning Groups 3 through 12 of the periodic table, characterized by partially filled d-orbitals.
Lanthanoids (Lanthanides)
The series of 15 metallic elements with atomic numbers 57 through 71, beginning with lanthanum (La) and ending with lutetium (Lu).
Actinoids (Actinides)
The series of 15 radioactive metallic elements with atomic numbers 89 through 103, beginning with actinium (Ac) and ending with lawrencium (Lr).

Lanthanoid and Actinoid Inset Series
The two rows displayed beneath the main body of the periodic table consisting of elements 57–71 (lanthanoids) and elements 89–103 (actinoids).
Post-transition Metals
The metallic elements located between the transition metals and metalloids, which include aluminium, gallium, indium, tin, thallium, lead, and bismuth.
Metalloids
The elements with properties intermediate between metals and nonmetals, forming a diagonal boundary on the periodic table that includes boron, silicon, germanium, arsenic, antimony, and tellurium.
Pnictogens
The family of elements categorized under Group 15 of the periodic table, consisting of nitrogen, phosphorus, arsenic, antimony, bismuth, and moscovium.
Chalcogens
The family of elements categorized under Group 16 of the periodic table, which includes oxygen, sulfur, selenium, tellurium, polonium, and livermorium.
Halogens
The group of highly reactive nonmetallic elements located in Group 17 of the periodic table, including fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine, astatine, and tennessine.
Noble Gases
The series of chemically inert, stable gaseous elements found in Group 18 of the periodic table, consisting of helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, radon, and oganesson.
State of Matter Color Coding (Ptable)
The visual convention classifying the state of an element under standard conditions: black indicates a solid, blue indicates a liquid, red indicates a gas, and grey indicates an unknown state.
