What is an isotope?

Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons.

What is the structure of an atom?

  • Nucleus consists of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, giving the nucleus an overall positive charge.

  • Negatively charged electrons orbit the nucleus in shells, giving the whole atom an overall neutral charge.

  • The rest of the atom is mostly empty space.

3
New cards

Define relative atomic mass.

An average of the masses of all isotopes of an atom compared with 1/12th of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.

4
New cards

Define relative isotopic mass.
