What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons and a different number of neutrons.
What is the structure of an atom?
Nucleus consists of positively charged protons and neutral neutrons, giving the nucleus an overall positive charge.
Negatively charged electrons orbit the nucleus in shells, giving the whole atom an overall neutral charge.
The rest of the atom is mostly empty space.
Define relative atomic mass.
An average of the masses of all isotopes of an atom compared with 1/12th of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
Define relative isotopic mass.
The mass of an isotope of an atom compared with 1/12th of a carbon-12 atom.
