New cards

where does the electron transport system/ oxidative phosphorylation occur

in the mitochondria

2
New cards

how many atp molecules are produced from the electron transport system

26 out of 30

3
New cards

explain how a proton gradient is created in the electron transport system

  • NADH and FADH2 are deoxidised which causes the release of high energy electrons

  • in the systems there are a series of electron acceptors which include proteins and enzymes and the electrons from the NAD & FAD are fed between the acceptors

  • during this process oxygen gets reduced to water

  • protons are exported from inside the mitochondria matrix to the intermembrane space to produce a gradient

explain how ATP is made from the electron transport system

  • the proton gradient between the matrix and the intermembrane space is what drives the ATP synthesis

  • the protons are transferred from the intermembrane space through the ATP synthase in to the matrix again.

  • The energy from this transport is used to bind the phosphate to the ADP to make ATP
