Phototropism
The phenomenon in which plants grow towards light to maximize the amount of light available for their leaves.
Auxin
A hormone produced in the tips of plants that promotes cell elongation.
Positive phototropism
The growth response of a plant towards light, caused by the movement of auxin to the shaded side of the stem, stimulating elongation in the cells.
Negative phototropism
The growth response of roots away from light, caused by the movement of auxin to the cells on the shaded side of the root.
Gravitropism
The coordinated process of differential growth in response to gravity.
Positive gravitropism
The growth response of roots towards gravity.
Negative gravitropism
The growth response of stems away from gravity.
Differential growth
Unequal growth rates in different parts of a plant, caused by the distribution of auxin.
